Dear Ho Yu family, we want to share this joyful news with you ![]()
Ho Yu Guzheng Team competed today in the Chinese Instrumental Ensemble category of the Joint School Music Competition. With a moving performance of “The Butterfly Lovers,” they won the Gold Award for the second consecutive year! ![]()

Even more exciting — we achieved this honor with the highest score of the competition.
Those few minutes on stage were backed by countless hours of practice and perseverance. Today, not only did they succeed, but they performed even better than they did during rehearsals — intonation, rhythm, ensemble coordination, and expressiveness were all on point, smooth and moving.
But there’s a small story that deeply moved the teachers, and we really want to share it:
The ensemble instruments included guzheng, wooden fish, pengling (small bells), and wind chimes. Toward the end of the piece, one of the children made a noticeable mistake — “The Butterfly Lovers” is a melody everyone knows, so the mistake was clear to the entire audience. But this child wasn’t affected, and the whole team calmly carried on, supporting each other, completing the piece smoothly.
Afterward, this child cried because of their own error.
When the judge learned about this, they kindly came over and said:
“It’s okay, it’s a very small thing. We did not deduct any points for a single mistake. Your overall performance was excellent.”
The judge also gave special recognition to our students and shared valuable insights with them, from which the children greatly benefited.
This is what we want to say to all the children:
Music is not about being perfect — it’s about having the courage to keep going, even when things aren’t perfect.
That composure under pressure, that mutual support, and that heart that still cares so deeply after the performance — that is the most precious growth of all.
Special thanks to:
Senior student Wong Yu Yuk for accompanying the team, cheering them on, and helping with all the arrangements
Ms. Yip, our Music Teacher— not only for being there throughout, guiding the team, but also for specially rearranging “The Butterfly Lovers” into a guzheng duet version for this competition, simplifying the musical lines so that the children could perform this classic piece of 20th-century Chinese music, reinterpreting its profound emotions in their own way.
“The Butterfly Lovers” is a story about love, courage, and transformation. Today, we saw that same strength in our children.
A round of applause for every child in the Ho Yu Guzheng Team! ![]()
Consecutive Gold Award, truly well-deserved.
