石室聖心大教堂——欣賞全球僅存的四座全石結構哥德式教堂之一,感受中西工匠合力打造的建築美學;
廣州近代史博物館——認識中國近代重要歷史人物與事件,了解粵港兩地與國家發展的深厚聯繫;
沙面建築群——穿梭於150多座歐洲風格建築之間,探索新巴羅克、券廊式、新古典等多元風格;
中山紀念堂——觀摩八角形宮殿式建築,體會傳統與西方結構的完美融合;
From 15th to 16th January, about 30 Primary 5 students from Ho Yu participated in the “Same Roots, Same Heart” Mainland Exchange Programme organised by the Education Bureau. They embarked on a two-day thematic study tour in Guangzhou, exploring “Western-style Architecture and Its Historical Culture”!
This tour was a key part of the “Visible Wonders” travel journal in Project Learning. With curiosity and a spirit of inquiry, the students visited a number of distinctive historical sites, including:
Sacred Heart Cathedral – One of only four fully stone-structured Gothic cathedrals in the world, showcasing the architectural beauty created by Chinese and French craftsmen;
Guangzhou Museum of Modern History – Learning about key figures and events in modern Chinese history, and understanding the close ties between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and national development;
Shamian Island – Exploring over 150 European-style buildings in styles ranging from Neo-Baroque to verandah-type and Neoclassical;
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall – Admiring the octagonal palace-style architecture and its fusion of traditional Chinese design and Western structure;
Dongshan Garden Villas – Walking among century-old Western-style villas with red-brick walls, and reflecting on the challenges and significance of cultural conservation.
At each stop, the students observed carefully and took detailed notes. They held group reflection sessions to discuss what they had seen and how it connected to their learning goals. After returning to Hong Kong, they will use these valuable first-hand materials to complete their “Visible Wonders” travel journals, documenting this learning journey that blended history, culture, and architecture.
This study tour not only broadened students’ horizons and enhanced their self-care abilities, but also cultivated positive attitudes such as responsibility, helpfulness, and courtesy. A big thank you to the teachers for their dedicated guidance, and a round of applause for our young architectural explorers for their attentiveness and enthusiasm!
