Museum of Hong Kong Literature’s 2nd “Young Writers Mentorship Program” Broadening Literary Horizons for Ho Yu Kids • Sowing Seeds of Creativity

A group of passionate Primary 4 and 5 writers from Ho Yu recently participated in the Museum of Hong Kong Literature’s 2nd “Young Writers Mentorship Program,” completing their first session last week. With the Museum’s support, we were honored to host renowned author Mr. Pu Wei (affectionately known as “Teacher Ngan”), who delivered an extraordinary creative writing masterclass.

The session began with a warm exchange of “Good afternoon” between students and Teacher Ngan. Focusing on “The Art of Selecting Themes and Conveying Meaning,” he guided students through interpreting the writing prompt “An Unforgettable Incident.” When students instinctively suggested writing about “scoring first place in exams,” Teacher Ngan provocatively asked: “What if you wrote about ‘missing first place by one point’ instead? Would that better capture the tension of ‘unforgettable’?” This epiphany moment had students nodding in revelation, learning how “imperfection often speaks louder than perfection” in storytelling.

Later, Teacher Ngan led a close-reading exercise of writing samples, demonstrating how deliberate word choices elevate a text from “ordinary” to “literary.” Students marveled: “Just one carefully chosen word can transform flat writing into something moving!”

“One conversation with a master can outweigh ten years of study”—this session has planted literary seeds in our young Ho Yu writers. We eagerly anticipate today’s (23rd June) visit to the Museum of Hong Kong Literature, where these budding authors will expand their creative universe!
